A Walk to Remember ~ Movie Review

After Landon Carter and his friends play a prank that leads to a student ending up in hospital, Landon is sentenced to community service that includes participation in the school play. Landon is popular and a rebel and he gets into trouble often. His anger stems from his father leaving him and his mother. The community service activities bring Landon closer to Jamie Sullivan, the baptist minister's daughter. The two of them have known each other since they were little, but Landon has always avoided being friends with her. Jamie is a sweet, soft-spoken and kindhearted person and is always willing to help anyone in need. Although she has few friends and people at school make fun of her, it doesn't deter her spirit.

Landon is cast in the play alongside Jamie and he asks her to help him with his lines. Jamie agrees, but has one condition: Landon has to promise that he won't fall in love with her. They practise at her house and start spending more time together. When Jamie walks up to Landon and his friends and says that she'll see him after school, Landon - afraid of what his friends will think - responds to Jamie by saying 'in your dreams.' He goes to her house, hoping that she'll carry on helping him, but Jamie refuses as Landon wants to keep their blossoming friendship a secret.

Landon visits Clay Gephardt(the student whom he played the prank on) in hospital and apologises to him. On the night of the Spring play, Jamie sings and blows Landon away. After the song, he kisses her and the curtain closes, leaving the two of them alone in the dark. Landon's estranged father wants to talk with him, but Landon angrily walks away. When his father begs him not to, he responds by stating that he taught him how.

In the caferia, Landon sits at Jamie's table. She ignores him and continues reading her book. He tells her that he misses her and that she inspires him. Jamie gets up and storms off and Landon follows her. Landon goes to Jamie's place and gives her a sweater that he bought her. She gratefully accepts it and he tells her he'll see her at school. Jamie's father speaks to her and warns her about Landon.

Belinda, Landon's ex-girlfriend, concocts a plan to humiliate Jamie. She along with Landon's other friends doctor a photo of Jamie to make it look more provocative. Belinda invites Jamie to eat lunch with her under false pretences and when Jamie enters the cafeteria, everyone starts laughing and Belinda shows her the doctored picture. A distressed Jamie turns to run out and bumps into Landon. He grabs the picture from Belinda and walks over to one of his friends named Dean, who's hysterical with laughter. Landon punches him and leaves with Jamie. He takes her home and asks her to go out with him. Jamie tells him that she's not allowed to date.

Landon asks Jamie's father for permission to go on a date with her. In spite of the reverend's reluctance, he comes around and agrees that Landon and Jamie can go out. On the night of their first date, Jamie and Landon have dinner and he makes two of the things on her bucket list come true: he drives her to the state line and has her put her feet on either side of the line so she can be in two places at once, and gets her a temporary tattoo. They go on a walk and Landon tells Jamie that he loves her. While sitting underneath the stars, Landon asks Jamie what the first thing on her bucket list is and she replies that she wants to get married in the church her mother grew up in.

Jamie tearfully tells Landon that she has leukemia and Landon goes to see his father, who's a doctor, to ask him to help his girlfriend. After his dad says he can't, Landon drives off in despair. While he's working on his car, Jamie shows up and apologises for not telling him about her illness sooner. He asks her if she's scared and she says she fears not being with him. Landon holds her and promises that he'll always be there.

After Jamie faints in her father's arms, she's taken to hospital. She gives Landon a book of quotes and scriptures that belonged to her mother and tells him that he was sent to her to help her through her suffering. Landon learns that his father paid for Jamie's home care and he thanks him. The two of them embrace.

Landon shows Jamie the telescope he built her so that she can see a rare comet. He then asks her to marry him and they have their wedding in her mother's church. In the voice over, Landon reveals that he and Jamie had a beautiful summer. She passed away shortly after they got married. Four years later, Landon returns to Beaufort and visits Mr. Sullivan. Landon tells him that he got into medical school and gives the book Jamie gave him to her father. He laments that Jamie never got her miracle, but Mr. Sullivan tells Landon that her miracle was him. Landon watches the sunset and in the narration, he reflects on how Jamie changed his life. He says that he'll always miss her, but that their love is like the wind; he can't see it, but he can feel it.

A Walk to Remember is one of my favourite movies of all time. Jamie and Landon's story has touched me and will stay with me forever. They came together so unexpectedly, not knowing how deeply they would end up changing each other's lives. At first, Landon was someone who didn't care much about the impact his actions had on other people.

One of the reasons he acted up was because he missed having his father in his life, despite his adamance not to show it. But as Landon spent more time with Jamie, he started becoming more aware of the consequences of his recklessness and wanted to make things right. Deep down, he's always been a kindhearted person, but he was hurt and that hurt made him angry.

Jamie is so sweet and adorable and her optimism and compassion is lovely. When she sings Only Hope, I get goosebumps. I love how Jamie and Landon supported one another. She believed in him and that belief made both of them stronger. Landon's love for Jamie is beautiful and pure and makes you cry buckets and buckets full. I think everyone needs to watch this movie. You won't regret it.

Like I watched the petals of a flower, fall to the ground. Parts of you fell away faster than others.  Your sense of humour stayed, but your kindness fell of the stem.  You aren’t the same person you once were. Your petals continue to fall. You are slowly changing into nothing but a stem.  The water you need is no longer available, like the attention you no longer receive.  Your petals have fallen to the ground, leaving nothing but a stalk. You have changed, leaving nothing but a stranger.                                                                                             ©writing_15_

I Can't Breathe - A Cry for Change

Photo Source: Wikipedia On the 25th of March, an African American man named George Floyd was brutally and inhumanely murdered by a police officer. The police officer, Derek Chauvin, knelt on George's neck for several minutes. Despite George repeatedly telling him that he couldn't breathe, Derek Chauvin didn't lift his knee. George Floyd begged and pleaded for his life, but the former officers showed no remorse. They treated him with such cruelty. He was a human being and they tried to strip him of his dignity in broad daylight. The video is heartbreaking to see. No one deserves to be treated like that. He was a father, a brother, a friend and an uncle. In his final moments, George yelled out for his mother. The ultimate plea for your life. A cry to be heard. To be seen.  Police brutality and racism has a long history, not just in America, but all over the world. If someone has a darker complexion, they're looked down upon an

Flight of a Starling - Review

Lo and Rita are sisters who are trapeze artists. They travel with their circus family from town to town, never staying in one place for long. Through all the unsteadiness in her community, Lo finds solid ground and a feeling of home with Dean. As the secrets bottle up inside of her, Lo makes a decision that has heartbreaking consequences.  Having read Paper Butterflies, I knew what to expect. I was mentally prepared for my heart to be shattered. Lisa Heathfield has a way of pulling you into the world she's created. You become so emotionally invested in the characters and their lives, that you just want to make everything better for them. It's clear fr
