Oscar Dunleavy is a boy with a talent for making delicious apple tarts. He bakes these tarts as a way of giving hope to people. He has a gift for sensing the way others are feeling and smells things in the air that are abstract, like sadness. So, whenever someone is in despair, he bakes them an apple tart. Things change when Oscar vanishes. He is presumed dead after his bike is found in the sea. Everyone believes he died, except for his best friend, Meg, and little brother, Stevie.
